AT THE MOVIES
For most the 1960s/70s is The Beatles, Woodstock and The Sex Pistols. For me - Mancini, Mandel and Bacharach. This is undoubtedly due to the music, cinema and television that were a permanent and joyful part of my childhood. From an early age I noticed: -
- Lalo Schiffrin's ear for instrumental (and vocal) colour as Steve McQueen chased baddies in fast cars (Bullitt, 1968)
- the lush, close harmonies of Disney's choir (Peter Pan,1953)
- the intervals, shape and beauty of a Mancini melody (The Party, 1968)
- Johnny Mandel’s detailed orchestrations (The Sailor Who Fell from Grace from the Sea, 1976)
- that bass flute and cimbalom could be a thing (John Barry, The Ipcress File , 1965)
Here's to a few of my best teachers - Johnny Mandel, Lalo Schifrin, Bernard Hermann, Henry Mancini, John Barry, Burt Bacharach, Neal Hefti and Ennio Morricone.
